2010 Nobel Prize in Physics

 

The 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded jointly to Dr. Andre Geim and Dr. Konstantin Novoselov "for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene." 


So, what is graphene?  Graphene is the same element used in your No. 2 pencil ("graphite") and to the element that makes a diamond - carbon!  So, why is graphite so soft, and diamond so hard?  And what makes graphene different?  The answer lies in their crystal structure...
